Sheldon Rempal had a huge season last year in the KHL in Russia.
That prompted his return stateside to try and get back into the NHL. But the trip hasn’t lasted very long.
Rempal was placed on waivers on Thursday by the Washington Capitals, according to Elliotte Friedman, likely to lead to his mutual contract termination.
The Capitals signed Rempal to a two-way deal early in free agency. Last season with Salavat Yulaev Ufa in the KHL, Rempal had 31 goals and 30 assists in 68 games.
Rempal has only played for AHL Hershey so far this season. Through four games, he had a goal and an assist.
If Rempal is indeed granted his release, he’ll get a chance to go join a team overseas and potentially get a solid contract.
Rempal could be claimed by an NHL team in the 24 hours following his placement on waivers, but assuming that doesn’t happen, he may depart for a different country once again.
In his NHL career, the 30-year old Rempal has played in 21 games. He has two goals and an assist.
Rempal has played at the top level for the Los Angeles Kings, Carolina Hurricanes, Vancouver Canucks and Vegas Golden Knights.
It’s been a solid professional journey already for the 5-foot-10 winger who was undrafted out of Clarkson. He has 254 AHL points in 332 games.
It’s not clear whether Rempal will get another chance at NHL minutes, but the best he can do is keep grinding away in hopes of one more shot.
