The NHL free agency market opens tomorrow, but there will be one less name on the market this offseason.
According to Hockey Insider Frank Seravalli, the Vancouver Canucks are closing in on a contract extension with starting goaltender Thatcher Demko, he announced in a X (formerly Twitter) post.. The extension will be signed as soon as tomorrow.
“Sources say #Canucks and goaltender Thatcher Demko are closing in on a contract extension that will keep him in Vancouver. Demko is eligible to sign an extension as soon as tomorrow and it sounds like that will indeed happen,” Seravalli posted.
TSN Hockey Insider, Darren Dreger, added onto Seravalli’s report confirming that Demko has agreed with the Canucks on term, but the financial details and structure of the extension is not yet set.
“It will get done. Sounds like they’ve agreed on terms, but still some work being done on $ and structure,” Dreger said in his post.
Getting Demko locked up long term is a huge relief for Vancouver. Demko missed the majority of the 2024-2025 season with a lower body injury that caused him to play in just 23 games. In those 23 games, Demko did a solid job helping his team with a record of 10-8-3 with a save percentage of .889 and 2.9 GAA.
In the 2023-2024 season, Demko appeared in 51 games where he racked up a record of 35-14-2 and a GAA of 2.45 as he led Vancouver to a playoff appearance for the first time since 2019.
