There was plenty of speculation that the Montreal Canadiens would be bringing Evgeny Kuznetsov back to the NHL for a comeback.
But the Canadiens don’t appear to actually be in the negotiations any longer.
Kuznetsov’s agent told La Page Sportive that Montreal has informed them they won’t be offering a contract.
Kuznetsov, 33 years old, spent the 2024-25 hockey season in the KHL for SKA St. Petersburg, tallying 37 points.
He had signed a four-year contract, but that was terminated in April, which seems to have set him up for an NHL return.

Kuznetsov played 723 games for the Capitals, scoring 568 points. He had 73 points in 97 playoff games and won a Stanley Cup.
Along with a short stint with Carolina, Kuznetsov has totaled 402 assists and 173 goals in the NHL.
It seems likely that Kuznetsov has other NHL suitors for his comeback. It just doesn’t sound like Montreal is one of them any longer.
