The Montreal Canadiens and the St. Louis Blues might not be done doing business this summer.
The Canadiens already shipped defenseman Logan Mailloux to the Blues for forward Zachary Bolduc. Bolduc is an encouraging, physical player who netted 19 goals and 36 points in his first real NHL season. At 22 years old, he fits Montreal’s trajectory and should be a valuable middle or bottom-six forward.
But Bolduc might not be alone. Another name circulating trade discussions is St. Louis’ Jordan Kyrou.
NHL Insider Frank Seravalli believes “Kyrou’s name remains out there” and that other teams feel they can convince him to waive his no-trade clause. There are also reports that the Canadiens are interested in Kyrou.
The main reason the Blues might want to trade him is because of his relatively expensive cap hit, which pays him $8.125 million annually through 2030-31. St. Louis also has a bevy of top-six forwards, particularly with the rise of Jimmy Snuggerud, and could search for another young skater on the back-end.
Still, this would be a dream offseason for Montreal if it could land Kyrou. He has done nothing but produce points over the last four years, tallying 131 goals and 285 points over his last 317 games.
Kyrou has not yet had that primetime playoff performance, but at 27 years old, he could grow with this blossoming Canadiens core. They finally got a taste for the postseason this spring, and adding a marquee winger like Kyrou would help them out of the first round.
The price is unclear, especially since Kyrou is a proven player with six more years of team control. But Montreal is on the rise, and it would be wise to at least check out his availability.
