The majority of Masters Tournament victors have been in the U.S. — but especially in recent years, the list of countries represented with wins in Augusta is growing.
Back in 2013, Adam Scott became the first Australian golfer to win the tournament. In 2021, Hideki Matsuyama became the first Japanese player to win the Masters, making it 11 non-U.S. countries to have a player win the major.
While Canada certainly has a significant presence in the golf world, there isn’t a deep history of Canadian golfers winning the Masters. In fact, coming into the 2025 tournament, it’s only happened once.

Here’s what to know about Canadians, and other international golfers, winning the Masters.
Has a Canadian player won the Masters?
A Canadian has won the Masters just once, back in 2003. Mike Weir won his only major title, becoming both the first player from his country to win the tournament, and the first left-hander to win it.
Weir’s Masters victory wasn’t just the first time a Canadian won in Augusta; it was also the first time a Canadian male won a major.
Mike Weir’s 2003 Masters victory
Weir took down Len Mattiace in a one-hole playoff in the 2003 Masters. Rain delayed the tournament by a day, but once it was complete, Weir was accepting a green jacket from the 2002 winner, Tiger Woods.
It was a strong second round that gave Weir his lead at -6, four strokes better than second-place entering the final day. A massive comeback from Mattiace — he went from +1 in the second round to a -3 finish — was a threat to Weir, but he held on late.
