Cam Newton doesn’t think Jalen Hurts is “elite”

Despite going to two Super Bowls and recently winning one, former Auburn Tigers QB and former NFL MVP Cam Newton is not sold on former Alabama and Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts.

Shockingly, Newton did not have Hurts in his top 10 of quarterbacks in the league.

On his 4th and 1 podcast, Newton explains why he left Hurts out of his top 10.

“Jalen Hurts is a great quarterback, but if we’re talking about what they bring to the table, it’s hard to judge what Jalen Hurts can do when you’re throwing to a guy like AJ Brown, DeVonta Smith, you have tight end skillset, you have a dominant defense, the best running back in the game,” Newton said.

“Jalen Hurts does not have to play elite for the Philadelphia Eagles to win. He has to play good—but he doesn’t have to play elite. We’re not asking you to win the game, we’re just asking you not to lose it.”

Hurts has already accomplished more than the former NFL MVP; he’s gone to two Super Bowls in three years and won one of them. Most of the men on Newton’s list haven’t.

Newton himself has only been to one Super Bowl and had a miserable game against the Denver Broncos, and never returned after that. You have to wonder in Newton’s case, is this about jealousy or rivalry?

People may have forgotten that Newton attended Auburn and Hurts graduated from Alabama. Although they never faced each other in college, the rivalry runs deep, so you have to wonder if that’s part of the reason Hurts didn’t make the list.

But if you take a look at Newton’s list, Patrick Mahomes, who has won the most Super Bowls of the men on that list, is third behind Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson. So maybe it’s not rivalry, just poor taste.
