Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman Cameron Heyward is reportedly seeking a raise.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Heyward, who is slated to make $14.75 million this season, is looking for more money from the Steelers. Heyward has already collected $13.45 million of that amount via a roster bonus in March.
Schefter notes that Heyward hasn’t been fully participating in practice as he seeks a raise.
“With little fanfare, Steelers four-time All-Pro defensive tackle Cameron Heyward hasn’t fully participated in practice yet this summer as he awaits a restructured contract that has not gotten done, per sources,” Schefter reported.
This is the first we’ve heard of any kind of contract dispute between Heyward and the Steelers. Heyward inked a two-year, $29 million extension last offseason, a contract he’s in the first year of.
Schefter says there hasn’t been any progress on a reworked deal with Heyward.
“Heyward is seeking a raise in a defensive market that has experienced a reset this off-season. Heyward and the Steelers have addressed this privately, but have not made any progress on any reworked deal, per sources,” Schefter added.
Many were anticipating Heyward’s decline after a down 2023 season that saw him deal with injury. However, Heyward showed he still has plenty left in the tank in 2024, which amounted to a bounce-back year for him.
The Steelers have shelled out a ton of money for players this offseason, with the most notable deals going to wide receiver DK Metcalf and edge rusher T.J. Watt.
We’ll see if Heyward gets what he wants, or if the Steelers decline just one year after extending his contract.
