When a team plans to start fresh with a rookie quarterback, it’s crucial that the roster is filled with depth across all positions to help the QB thrive. The Tennessee Titans are one such team this year.
With Cam Ward, the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL draft, the Titans have worked to assemble a solid supporting cast. However, depth remains a problem, especially at wide receiver.
And it’s an area of concern, according to Titans reporter Jim Wyatt.
In an exchange with fans on Tuesday, Wyatt shed light on the delicate state of the team’s WR room.
Wyatt wrote, “The receiver spot has three veterans in Calvin Ridley, Van Jefferson and Tyler Lockett, but behind them the team has some unproven players. So, the team is an injury away from needing to rely on those guys.”
He added, “I think the rookies, Chimere Dike and Elic Ayomanor, are talented, and I like Bryce Oliver, too. But these guys are going to have to prove it while playing with a rookie quarterback.”
Ridley enters the 2025 season as the Titans’ unquestioned No. 1 receiver. Last season, he led the team with 64 receptions for 1,017 yards and four touchdowns despite the quarterback struggles.
Cam Ward will definitely lean heavily on Ridley this season. Ridley’s leadership has been widely praised.
In August, Titans offensive coordinator Nick Holz said:
“It feels like he’s just kind of really taken a leadership role in the receiver room and in the passing game. … I think every time you talk to one of these receivers, all they talk about is Calvin’s work ethic and how he’s taught me this and done this and done that. And that’s probably a really cool role for Calvin to be in.”
The question is what the WR room can offer beyond Ridley, Van Jefferson and Tyler Lockett.
That uncertainty will be tested when the Titans face the Denver Broncos in their season opener on Sunday.
