Chicago quarterback Caleb Williams isn’t easing into his second year in the league. In fact, he’s aiming for something no player in Bears history has ever done.
Can the Bears’ young star be the first to hit 4,000 yards?
During training camp on Tuesday, the former top overall pick laid out a bold objective: becoming the first quarterback in franchise history to throw for 4,000 yards in a season. That mark has stood untouched since the team’s inception, with Erik Kramer’s 3,838-yard effort in 1995 still holding the top spot.

Williams didn’t stop there.
“I’ve got goals for myself,” he told reporters. “Topping 4,000 yards, hitting 70 percent on completions, and turning drives into points. That’s what I’m working toward.”
Chicago spent the offseason building around him, adding offensive lineman Joe Thuney, wide receiver Devin Duvernay, and center Drew Dalman. The hope is that a better line and more reliable weapons will give Williams the tools he needs to lead a top-tier offense.
And based on early fan reactions, plenty of people believe he’s got a real shot.
One comment read, “He’s got the right mindset. Let’s win some games.” Another said, “With this o-line and crew, he could absolutely do it.”
Supporters pointed to his growing cast: DJ Moore, Rome Odunze, Jermaine Burton, Cole Kmet, and rookie tight end Colston Loveland. All are expected to contribute to a unit that’s quietly built one of the most complete offensive groups Chicago’s had in years.
Last season, Williams posted 3,541 yards with a 62.5 percent completion rate, 20 touchdowns, and six picks. That was as a rookie, on a team that lacked consistency and protection. Even then, he came within 500 yards of history.
Now, with a stronger foundation, a year of experience, and clear goals in mind, Williams is chasing something bigger. Whether or not he pulls it off, the bar has been set.
And everyone is watching.
