Browns’ unexpected QB injury opens the door for Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel as rookies

The Cleveland Browns’ quarterback competition has taken a twist.

One of the four competitors is hurt.

Kenny Pickett hurt his hamstring on Saturday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Pickett is expected to “re-evaluate the injury later this week.”

According to Schefter, Pickett had been playing well. But now, he takes a step aside.

The veteran Joe Flacco is a known commodity for Cleveland.

But without Pickett, rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders should get more reps in the week ahead.

If one of the rookies can take advantage of the extra chances, they could make a run at the starting job that most weren’t expecting them to get right out of the chute.

This could also be a bad break for Pickett. Unlike the soon-to-retire Flacco, Pickett is 26 and still has an NFL future. If he were to win the starting job in Cleveland, Pickett could prove he still belongs. Now, though, Pickett’s future has just a bit more doubt in it.

This surely won’t be the last twist in the Browns’ competition, but it’s one more step along the way to yet another starting QB in Cleveland.
