Browns sign former Bengals RB after recent release

From the Cincinnati Bengals to the Cleveland Browns, with just a quick stop in New England in between.

That’s the path traveled by the newest Browns signing.

Trayveon Williams joined Cleveland on Monday, the team announced.

Williams had spent the first stage of the offseason with the Patriots, but otherwise, he’s been with the Bengals for his entire NFL career.

He’s a 27-year old running back who Cincinnati picked in the sixth round in 2019.

In each of the past two seasons, Williams played all 17 games for the Bengals.

At least for Cincinnati, Williams played nearly all his snaps on special teams. In 2024, he was in on 55 percent of the Bengals’ special teams snaps, and that number was 64 percent in 2023.

Last season, conversely, he was on the field for just 10 offensive snaps.

It’s not clear yet whether the Browns plan to reprise Williams’ special teams role or if they think he’s got some juice left as an RB, too.

Williams has a total of 62 carries for 307 yards in his NFL career. That’s 5.0 yards per carry.

He actually has never scored an NFL touchdown.

Williams can return kicks in addition to kick coverage. He had 33 kick returns for the Bengals over the past three seasons for a total of 743 yards (22.5 yards per return).

If nothing else, a return to Ohio has to feel decent for Williams. Now it’s up to him to try and win a roster spot with the Browns.
