Browns’ Shedeur Sanders has crucial relationship with Deshaun Watson

Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders is surely receiving advice from all sorts of directions.

That includes, reportedly, from QB Deshaun Watson, who is out for the time being as he recovers from a torn Achilles.

Browns beat writer Mary Kay Cabot writes that Watson “has also taken Sanders under his wing to help him come up the learning curve quickly, and it’s been working.”

She adds, “Sanders’ Hall of Fame dad, Deion, publicly supported Watson when some Browns fans cheered while he was down on the field in tears with his retorn Achilles Oct. 20 against the Bengals, and Watson is only too happy to repay the favor.”

Watson was once a great NFL quarterback, but that was a long time ago in Houston.

Lately, he’s been a bust, suspended for his off-field transgressions, and brutal when on the field for the Browns.

Cleveland made a gigantic trade and contract commitment to get Watson, but owner Jimmy Haslam finally admitted in March that it was a “big swing and a miss.”

Watson has certainly seen a lot in the NFL, so maybe he makes sense at least as a football mentor for Sanders.

But it’s a weird energy all the way around. After Haslam’s comments, it wouldn’t have been surprising for Watson to just sort of fade into oblivion. But he’s around, in meetings, and trying to be helpful, according to Cabot.

We’ll just have to see how that works out for Shedeur.
