Browns’ Myles Garrett vows to send Packers legend Aaron Rodgers into retirement

There was a growing sense that the Steelers were starting to believe Aaron Rodgers might back out of his verbal agreement and not become their veteran quarterback. The former Packers and Jets QB was looking for a contender—one capable of competing for a Super Bowl—and a team that needed a starter this season.

“I just think verbally, behind the scenes, not that he guaranteed it, but he’s told [the Steelers], ‘Listen, I’m gonna play for you. I just don’t want to go there and then miss part of mandatory minicamp because of my personal issues. I’m pretty sure they’re gonna be solved by the end of May, at least in my satisfaction where I can give you my all,’” Ian O’Connor said.

Last week, Rodgers stayed true to his word by signing with Pittsburgh.

“Four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers informed the Steelers he’ll fly to Pittsburgh on Friday and sign before next week’s minicamp, sources tell The Insiders,” NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero posted.

Landing a Super Bowl-winning quarterback is always a big move, but at 41 years old, Rodgers’ signing has raised some concerns. Critics point to his age and question the long-term wisdom of the decision. Ryan Clark believes it could backfire.

“Aaron Rodgers signing with the Steelers is the worst-case scenario. I think he’ll play good enough, & the team will be just good enough to miss out on a franchise guy next year! One of the greatest players of the era, & one of its greatest head coaches… just years too late,” Clark said.

Rodgers will now face division rival Myles Garrett twice a year—an unsettling prospect for any quarterback. Garrett, who has racked up over 100 career sacks, had some ominous words for the Steelers’ new signal-caller.

“I think it’s a good opportunity to put him in the graveyard,” Garrett said.

With that kind of talk, Garrett clearly intends to make Rodgers’ stay in the AFC North a difficult one—and possibly hasten his path to retirement.
