Browns-Dolphins trade pitch sends $56 million Pro Bowl Darren Waller backup plan to Miami

Just last week, the Miami Dolphins made a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers, sending Jonnu Smith and Jalen Ramsey away. Smith’s trade was quite the shock and even left him with a sting.

“I didn’t foresee this happening with how the season went for me individually,” Smith said. “Obviously, I had aspirations of ending my career in Miami, with it basically being home for me, my children, my family. But I understand the business side of it, and it didn’t work out. I’m grateful. I’ve got no ill feelings toward Miami and nobody in the organization. I can’t sit here and lie and say it didn’t sting when the process was playing itself out.”

The trade left the Dolphins with a huge gap at the tight end position. The answer to fill that void was trading for Darren Waller, who spent last season in retirement. However, if Waller doesn’t work out, Miami could explore the asking price for Cleveland’s David Njoku.

“One of the top potential trade candidates for Cleveland is former Pro Bowl tight end David Njoku, who is entering the final year of his contract and just watched the Browns select fellow tight end Harold Fannin Jr. in the draft. While actual trade speculation surrounding Njoku has been relatively tame over the last several months, many are now pointing to a new possible destination for the 29-year-old: the Miami Dolphins,” Sports Illustrated’s Matthew Schmidt wrote.

This, in all seriousness, would be a safer option at tight end and could help Mike McDaniel keep his head coaching job. McDaniel is entering a prove-it type of year, but the Dolphins aren’t doing him any favors. Adding Njoku would give McDaniel a significant weapon on offense. Miami is the team in the NFL with potentially the most question marks as training camp approaches.
