Browns’ Deshaun Watson nightmare might not be over yet

Deshaun Watson just won’t go away.

The most massive mistake in the history of the Cleveland Browns could actually, conceivably, improbably return to the field in 2025 as their starting quarterback.

It’s not the most likely outcome, but Browns beat reporter Mary Kay Cabot released a new story analyzing where Watson is at in his comeback from a torn Achilles, and the door has been left open.

“The Browns haven’t ruled him out for the season yet like they have linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah (neck), and they’ve always been in the ‘never-say-never’ camp,” Cabot writes. “Besides, they certainly don’t want to discourage Watson when he’s working so tirelessly to come back, and making a meaningful contribution inside the building.”

Cabot writes that one of her sources says Watson might be practicing by October.

“In the meantime, sources say Watson has been an awesome teammate inside the quarterback room and meeting rooms, and has been a great cheerleader for the four quarterbacks vying for the starting job in Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders,” Cabot writes. “He’s been especially helpful to the rookies in Gabriel and Sanders, who are working overtime to remain in the starting mix.”

The vibes here are quite odd.

Browns owner called Watson a “big swing and a miss” in March.

All the different quarterbacks on the roster, including two draft picks, suggest the Watson era is over.

But Deshaun is still there, trying to be a mentor and trying to get back on the field.

Maybe there’s an unlikely scenario where Watson somehow salvages a piece of his Cleveland tenure.

But it seems more likely that this is trending toward one more bummer of an ending.
