Browns coach gives key update on Shedeur Sanders in QB competition

Shedeur Sanders is doing everything he can.

That’s the message early in the Cleveland Browns’ offseason. They’re currently in the Organized Team Activities stage of things, and it’s a busy quarterback time for them.

The Browns have veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett, along with rookies Dillon Gabriel and Sanders.

It’s still probably most likely that a starting job ends up with either Flacco or Pickett. That’s not even considering the injured Deshaun Watson who is still around, too.

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski recently praised the way Sanders and Gabriel have absorbed information.

“Those guys are doing great,” Stefanski said, via Pro Football Talk. “They are both wired to get in early, stay late, put in whatever work is required. They’re sponges in the meeting room, which I think is really fun for me. In my vantage point, I get to sit there and watch the two young guys look over and there’s Joe, 40 years old, won a Super Bowl. There’s Kenny Pickett, just going into year four, but first round draft pick. That’s been on a couple teams, won a Super Bowl last year. There’s Deshaun, had a ton of success in his career. They can kind of feed off of all those guys. So that’s the thing, it’s fun for me to watch them get better sometimes just by listening.”

That’s exactly what the rookies need to be doing at this point.

There’s pretty much nothing that Flacco, Pickett or Watson as a collective haven’t seen in their football careers.

It’s still early days in the NFL for the third- and fifth-round QBs. They’ve got a lot to learn, even after playing tons of football in college.

Their best chances of starting down the road are to gain as much as they can right now from the more experienced quarterbacks around them, and it sounds like they’re doing just that.
