Bronny James ‘MVP’ chants, explained: Lakers rookie shakes off late-game taunts from Wizards crowd

The Lakers blew out the Wizards 134-96 on Thursday night. That big of a lead probably means two things: LeBron James had a good game, and Bronny James got some mop-up duty in garbage time.

Sure enough, the elder James led the way with 24 points and 11 assists. Rui Hachimura dropped 22 points and Shake Milton added 21 off the bench. While several notable Lakers filled up the stat sheet, the Wizards faithful didn’t miss an opportunity to troll L.A.’s most famous rookie.

Here’s how Bronny reacted when the Washington crowd taunted him while at the free throw line late in Thursday’s blowout win.

Bronny James ‘MVP’ chant

James’ rookie year has not gone to plan, at least from his perspective. He did get to make history with his dad in the first game of the season, but he has struggled mightily at the NBA level and been up and down in the G League.

James got to enter Thursday’s game thanks to the giant lead his teammates accrued, notching 12 minutes on the court, his second-highest total of the season. He finished with a season-high five points, and while he only shot 1-6 from the field, he made all three of his free throws.

At one point when James stepped to the line, the Wizards crowd serenaded him with “MVP” chants.

Clearly, the Wizards faithful was trolling James, who’s been the subject of mockery for the perceived nepotism that led to the Lakers drafting him. Typically, players don’t respond when the crowd chirps at them. If they do, it tends to just increase the volume of the taunt. Since there were only six seconds left in the game — one that had long been decided — James simply shook his head, brushing off the troll before sinking the free throw attempt.
