The Denver Broncos have been heavily urged by Broncos Country to sign a wide receiver in free agency and the team has agreed to do so, though it’s not a move that will have fans high-fiving each other excitedly.
On Tuesday evening, the team agreed to a two-year, $6 million deal that could be worth up to $8 million with free-agent wide receiver Trent Sherfield. That deal will become official on Wednesday with the start of the new league year.
Sherfield is the first offensive player the Broncos have come to terms with since the start of the legal tampering period, at least in terms of free agents from other teams. Undrafted in 2018 out of Vanderbilt, Sheffield has played for five other teams, most recently with the Minnesota Vikings.
If you pay attention to what Sean Payton is building with this offense, he wants wide receivers who can block. That is the main reason Lil’Jordan Humphrey has stayed around, much to the dismay of some Broncos fans. Sherfield is a guy who plays mostly on special teams, but he is willing to get in there and mix it up.
Catching passes is actually the last thing you’ll see him do on offense. For his career, he has just 86 receptions.
It’s an interesting signing for the Broncos, but one that speaks to the culture that Payton is building. The loss of Tremon Smith in free agency, even though he plays on the other side of the ball, likely factored into this move because of how much Smith meant to Denver’s special teams group.
The Broncos are serious about having a top-notch special teams group and wide receivers that can be active in the running game. Sherfield fits those roles and that is what has brought him to the Mile High City.
