If you were to poll fans of the Denver Broncos about which position the team should target in April’s draft, most would overwhelmingly suggest a position on offense. However, the two of the top draft analysts don’t agree.
Last week, Daniel Jeremiah released his first mock draft of the offseason and he has the Broncos selecting South Carolina safety Nick Emmanwori. Bucky Brooks followed that up with his first mock draft and he agrees on the safety position, just a different player.
Brooks has the Broncos taking Georgia safety Malaki Starks.
“Giving Vance Joseph another high-IQ defender would help the Broncos’ defense sustain its impressive level of play. Starks’ instincts, awareness and toughness make him an ideal fit in a “see ball, get ball” scheme”, writes Brooks.
Broncos need to improve safety position, but is a first-round pick too rich?
The Broncos released both Justin Simmons and Caden Sterns this past offseason, decisions that many fans strongly disagreed with at the time. But the team signed Brandon Jones in free agency and he had a fantastic season for the Broncos.
Malaki Starks is a rare breed…

P.J. Locke can be a great special teams player and the team can count on him to come in as a rotational player at the safety position, but most fans wouldn’t complain about an upgrade at that spot. Starks would certainly be that.
In three seasons with the Bulldogs, Starks racked up 197 tackles and had six interceptions. He is a terrific tackler who can come up and help in run support but his ball skills are what take him from a good prospect to a great prospect. For teams that need a safety, Starks may be the best in this class.
