In his first year as Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenhemier is adding new wrinkles to the offense led by quarterback Dak Prescott. As the team opened up training camp this week with Schottenheimer finally taking over the reigns as the lead man for the franchise, he told reporters this week that he’s going to be adding the pistol and wildcat formations to the offense.

“We’re going to be difficult to defend, because we’re going to be under center, we’re going to be in the (shot)gun, you haven’t seen pistol (formation) yet but pistol is coming for all of our opponents that are listening to me talk right now. There’ll be some pistol, there’ll be some wildcat, again, we’re going to be multiple, and we’re going to attack people. Our system is built to do that.”
The biggest addition for the Cowboys offense this offseason was acquiring wide receiver George Pickens from Pittsburgh, but they also rebuilt their running back room with veterans Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders. Those two free agency additions along with 2025 fifth-round draft selection Jaydon Blue will give Schottenheimer plenty of weapons to build an offense for Prescott.
That offense may look much different than what has been the normal in Dallas for many seasons, but Schottenheimer believes the talent is there to be more unique on that side of the ball.
