Brewers’ Pat Murphy speaks his mind on fans booing Craig Counsell

Milwaukee Brewers fans are more than familiar with the Chicago Cubs’ manager, Craig Counsell. He spent nine years leading the Brew Crew before taking the job with the Cubs.

So, when Counsell returned to Milwaukee for the first two games of the NLDS, he was met by a barrage of boos. The fans wanted to make their voices heard that they were not too pleased to see him take a job with their division rivals.

Some fans view him as a sellout, taking a higher-paying job and leaving his home state. Milwaukee did try to retain him, but Chicago one-upped them with a bigger five-year, $40 million contract.

Pat Murphy served as Craig Counsell’s bench coach in Milwaukee. The two grew very close to each other, and when Murphy was asked about what he thought of the boos from his fans, he was quick to share his thoughts via the Chicago Sun-Times’ Steve Greenberg.

“I hate it,” said Murphy. “It’s none of my business, but I know this. They never boo a bum. You’re getting booed, you’re good at something. I hate it because I know how much he loves Milwaukee. I know how much he loves this city. He loves this state. … [But] fans will be fans.”

Milwaukee fans should focus more on what they have than what they lost. Murphy has been exceptional since taking over the managerial position. He won the Manager of the Year Award last season and could be on his way to doing it again this year.
