Brentford vs. Man United lineups, expected starting 11, confirmed team news, injuries: Amorim to rest Europa heroes

Manchester United travel to Brentford on Sunday boosted by the best result of the Ruben Amorim era.

United were 3-0 winners in Bilbao against Athletic Club in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League semifinal in midweek.

However, with the Red Devils’ Premier League season effectively a write-off, Amorim is unlikely to take any chances with his key men at the Gtech Community Stadium this weekend, with Athletic visiting Old Trafford for the return leg on Thursday.

Brentford have a decent record against United on their own patch, sharing a 1-1 draw last season after claiming a famous 4-0 victory in August 2022.

Brentford have Aaron Hickey and Igor Thiago back in full training following lengthy injury lay-offs.

However, Vitaly Janelt is likely to miss the remaining games this term with a heel injury and joins Josh Dasilva and ex-Liverpool man Fabio Carvalho in the treatment room.

Yoane Wissa continued his excellent individual season with a goal in Brentford’s 2-0 win over Champions League-chasing Nottingham Forest last time out. The Congolese forward has 17 goals in 31 Premier League appearances this term.

Brentford predicted lineup (4-2-3-1, right to left): Flekken (GK) — Kayode, Collins, Van den Berg, Henry — Norgaard, Yarmolyuk — Mbeumo, Damsgaard, Schade — Wissa

Despite United’s healthy advantage in their Europa League semifinal, Amorim has pledged not to take any unnecessary risks. “We always have a responsibility to perform. We always have a responsibility to offer the result. But in this moment, we have to be clear: our focus is more on saving players and trying to be competitive,” he said. “It’s not a good thing to say, but we need to understand the context.”

Amorim confirmed Noussair Mazraoui will not be risked, given his recent workload and the fact that Diogo Dalot remains out with a calf injury. Matthijs de Ligt returned to the bench in Bilbao and could start here. Youngsters Tyler Fredricson, Jaydan KamasonHarry Amass and Chido Obi might all get opportunities.

Experience is likely to be provided by former Brentford playmaker Christian Eriksen and Mason Mount, who scored in this fixture last season.

Man United predicted lineup (3-4-2-1, right to left): Onana (GK) — Fredricson, De Ligt, Shaw — Kamason, Eriksen, Ugarte, Amass — Mainoo, Mount — Obi

Injured: Mazraoui (fatigue) L. Martinez (ACL), Zirkzee (hamstring), Dalot (calf), Evans (undisc.) Heaven (ankle, doubt), Collyer (leg, doubt)
