Brendan Rodgers leaves Celtic with club legends to take charge

Rangers have already changed manager this season, with Danny Rohl replacing Russell Martin, and now it is Celtic’s turn to have a new face in the dugout.

Brendan Rodgers has made the surprise decision to resign at Celtic, following the club’s 3-1 defeat to Scottish Premiership leaders Heart of Midlothian last weekend.

This is an unceremonious exit for Rodgers, who won four Scottish Premierships, three Scottish Cups, and four Scottish League Cups in two stints as the Hoops’ manager.

Ange Postecoglou has been linked with replacing Rodgers. The Australian won the Scottish Premiership twice with Celtic and has since managed in the Premier League.

He won the Europa League with Tottenham Hotspur, but was dismissed due to poor form domestically. Postecoglou managed Nottingham Forest this season, but was dismissed after just 39 days.

As Celtic play Falkirk on Wednesday night, they need an interim manager. A club statement read, “former Celtic manager, Martin O’Neill and former Celtic player, Shaun Maloney have agreed to take charge of Celtic first-team matters.”

Martin O’Neill and Shaun Maloney will get fans onside

O’Neill has recently been working as a pundit on talkSPORT, having not managed since a stint at Nottingham Forest in 2019.

However, he was Celtic manager in the early 2000s, where he won the Scottish Premier League three times and got them to the final of the UEFA Cup.

He has an impressive managerial CV, which also includes being the manager of Ireland, Aston Villa, and Sunderland.

Maloney is Celtic’s development squad coach, but has been a manager himself at Wigan Athletic and Hibernian.

He made over 200 appearances for Celtic in two stints as a player, where he won the Scottish Premier League five times.
