Brazilian Real Madrid winger braces for club departure

With new manager Xabi Alonso in charge of the Real Madrid squad, the Los Blancos side will look remarkably different once the 2025-26 season kicks off– potentially without winger Rodrygo.

If the 2025 Club World Cup was any clue, Rodrygo does not have a major role carved out in the Real Madrid lineup under Alonso, who will look to implement his vision throughout the upcoming campaign. During the Club World Cup, Rodrygo logged just 93 minutes across three matches before Real Madrid was bounced from the competition, which was a stark drop off from his usual workload.

As a result, Rodrygo has entertained the possibility of a transfer to another major club, and several links between Rodrygo and the Premier League have already emerged. Most recently, Rodrygo was linked to Tottenham Hotspurs, but the speedy Brazilian winger rebuked that potential transfer.

Still only 24 years old, Rodrygo logged 11 goal contributions (six goals and five assists) across 30 La Liga fixtures and added another five goals in Real Madrid’s Champions League run. With plenty of quality football still in his future, Rodrygo will look to move to a club with serious Champions League ambitions, and the technical forward has an idea of where he’d like to land.

According to Indykaila News, Rodrygo has expressed his interest in joining the Premier League-winning side Liverpool, a move which would certainly keep Rodrygo in the Champions League mix. Liverpool have already had an active summer transfer window with the additions of Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong, but the reigning Premier League champions could further bolster its attacking depth if Rodrygo joins the club, a move which would fill a sudden gap along the left wing with Luis Diaz officially heading to Bayern Munich.

To further illustrate his desire to leave Real Madrid, Rodrygo has also switched his representation, hiring the likes of Kia Joorabchian to negotiate his upcoming move according to 90MIN’s Fabricio Carvalho. In the past, Joorabchian was responsible for the transfers of Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano to West Ham in 2006, a development which received considerable ire from his contemporaries at the time.

Real Madrid is slated to kick off its La Liga season with a home match against Osasuna on Tuesday, Aug. 19– with or without Rodrygo.
