Braves rising star ‘crushes’ fastballs, unique stats reveal

The Atlanta Braves have a rising star in their midst, and he’s already a master at shredding one particular pitch.

On Wednesday, MLB Network’s Jon Morosi spoke about a key stat for the 24-year-old catcher.

“If you want to get into the big leagues as a young player, prove that you can hit the fastball,” Morosi said.

“Drake Baldwin crushes the fastball … a .370 average (against fastballs).”

“He’s had some dramatic, late-game hits for the Braves this season. He’s shown an ability to be really comfortable on the big stage.”

“I also love talking about multi-sport athletes,” Morosi continued.

“Drake Baldwin, in the high school class of 2019 in Wisconsin, (was) one of the best hockey players in the whole state. And right now, he’s only the second ever graduate of Madison West High School to make the Major Leagues in baseball.”

Baldwin’s .370 batting average versus fastballs ranks No. 7 in MLB. His hard-hit rate of 58.3 ranks at No. 20. It looks like that hockey experience might be paying off.

The former No. 96 overall pick is slashing .337/.381/.912 with five home runs and 15 RBI in 98 at-bats this season.

After a terrible start to the season, the Braves, 25-28, are still in the playoff hunt, and Baldwin could emerge as a key contributor if they continue to stay alive.
