Brandon Hyde firing, explained: Orioles make manager change amid disappointing start to season

It’s not even Memorial Day, but a third MLB team has already fired its manager.

The Orioles announced on Saturday that the team was moving on from Brandon Hyde just 43 games into the season. Hyde had been with the team since 2019 and was named the AL Manager of the Year in 2023 after leading Baltimore to a 101-win season.

In Hyde’s place, Oriole’s third-base coach Tony Mansolino will take over as the interim manager. The move is also the first big decision since owner David Rubenstein took over the team last year.

“As is sometimes the case in baseball, change becomes necessary, and we believe this is one of those moments,” Rubenstein said in a statement.

Here’s a breakdown of why Baltimore made this decision.

Brandon Hyde firing, explained

The Orioles are one of the most disappointing teams in the league, entering play on Saturday with a 15-28 record, the fourth-worst record in the league. Baltimore began the season with huge expectations after making the playoffs in each of the past two seasons, so this move will be an attempt for them to turn things around.

Hyde was first hired before the 2019 season, and Baltimore stuck with him as the organization struggled through a rebuild. Then, in 2023, the Orioles broke through with the best record in the American League, which helped Hyde win the AL Manager of the Year award.

However, Baltimore couldn’t sustain that momentum. After getting swept out of the 2023 playoffs, the Orioles struggled down the stretch in 2024, losing a wild-card playoff series. Hyde ends his Orioles tenure with an 0-5 playoff record despite four home games.

While the Orioles have one of the strongest groups of young hitters in the league, they are in the bottom third in the league in runs scored. Additionally, Baltimore’s -75 run differential is second-worst in baseball, ahead of just the Rockies.

In total, Hyde had a .461 winning percentage with Baltimore, producing three full winning seasons and three full losing seasons.

Who is Tony Mansolino?

Tony Mansolino has been with the Orioles since 2021, serving as the team’s third base coach in that span. Mansolino was a longtime minor league player before Cleveland hired him to be a minor league coach in 2016.

While Mansolino has never managed a major league game, he did manage multiple minor league teams while with the Guardians organization.
