Liverpool faced a very tough test with their visit to the south coast, but as it has for much of the season, things went their way as the Reds escaped a tough battle with a 2-0 victory at Bournemouth.
Mohamed Salah’s double paved the way for victory, and the visitors were strong overall throughout the 90 minutes. Yet it has to be said that Liverpool were also fortunate at a number of moments as key decisions went in their favor.
Salah opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Lewis Cook was judged to have fouled Cody Gakpo while chasing a ball over the top. In truth, it was an extremely soft decision, as there was very little contact between the two players. VAR did not intervene, thanks in part to this season’s directive to cut down on re-refereeing matches, and Salah took his chance for a 20th league goal of 2024/25.
As Bournemouth worked hard to get back level with a bright start to the second half, they had their chance as Justin Kluivert had a wide-open goal gaping for the equalizer, but he somehow rifled the ball hideously wide. That was the turning point in the match, as Salah would go down the other end and put Liverpool 2-0 up shortly after.
That was all she wrote, as Alisson was forced to make one more big save in stoppage time to preserve the clean sheet.
Liverpool are now nine points clear at the top of the Premier League table, with second-place Arsenal set to face Manchester City tomorrow at home looking to keep pace.

FULLTIME: Bournemouth 0-2 Liverpool
The Cherries were bright, but it just wasn’t their day in front of goal. Justin Kluivert’s terrible miss is the turning point in the game, as Liverpool went 2-0 up shortly after. Bournemouth were very good and probably on another day earn a point, but today it wasn’t to be.
Liverpool go nine points clear at the top of the table!
90+2 min: Chance, Bournemouth! A big save by Alisson to deny a deflected Antoine Semenyo cross, and then a follow-up shot pulverizes Tyler Adams! Bournemouth have continually come close!
83rd min: Chance, Bournemouth! Antoine Semenyo rifles a howitzer just wide of the post! He had the goalkeeper beaten, but also beat the post! That’s a vicious effort, but sees it flash wide!
The Cherries have put a good effort in today, but they just can’t convert in front of goal.
80th min: With 10 minutes to go and chasing a two-goal deficit, Bournemouth turn to Daniel Jebbison to replace Ryan Christie, an attacking change.
The Egyptian collects the ball from 10 yards out atop the right corner of the six-yard box, and he delivers a lovely left-footed curler into the top corner!

In the aftermath, Adoni Iraola is shown a yellow card after a long discussion with the fourth official. It’s unclear what he’s upset about, but he’s been booked.
71st min: Chance, Bournemouth! JUSTIN KLUIVERT WITH AN ALL-TIME TERRIBLE MISS! Marcus Tavernier hits the post with a long-range banger, which leaves Alisson on the turf having dove to try and save it. The rebound falls right to Kluivert at the right post, and with the entire goal to shoot at, he snatches it miles into the crowd!
That’s a truly horrible miss! He had to score, the goal mouth was 4 yards out and completely open!

69th min: This is a tough one for Liverpool as Trent Alexander-Arnold will have to come off after suffering an injury to his right leg. Conor Bradley will be coming on to replace him, and Darwin Nunez will also be entering the match to replace Cody Gakpo.
66th min: The referee books Virgil van Dijk for knocking Dango Outtara to the ground. Bournemouth make the first substitution of the game, with David Brooks off and replaced by Marcus Tavernier.
57th min: After Trent Alexander-Arnold has a good attempt blocked, Bournemouth tried to counter and Alexis Mac Allister commits a foul to break it up. The Argentine has already been booked, so the fans look for a second yellow card, but the referee isn’t interested.
That was enough for Arne Slot, as he replaced Mac Allister with Curtis Jones in midfield.
54th min: After drawing the first yellow card on Christie, Alexis Mac Allister is now booked himself for blocking off Dango Outtara on the counter-attack. It came after the Cherries forward cooked Luis Diaz to get free. Bournemouth have started the second half very well.
Then, Huijsen is shown a yellow card shortly after as the bookings are flying.
50th min: Chance, Bournemouth! Antoine Semenyo is denied by a great save from Alisson! He is threaded through near the left post, but is smothered by the Brazilian who comes off his line well to deny the chance from six yards out!
49th min: Just moments after the first booking of the game, Ryan Gravenberch picks one up himself for almost the same thing, dragging back an opponent at pace through midfield.
48th min: Ryan Christie is shown a yellow card for dragging back Alexis Mac Allister while he was racing through midfield on the break. An easy call for the referee.
2nd half kickoff: They’re back under way at Vitality Stadium, where the home side will look to get themselves going against the Premier League leaders!
HALFTIME: Bournemouth 0-1 Liverpool
A decent first half from each team’s perspective, but things to build on. Liverpool held a lot of possession, got in good shooting positions, and have themselves in front, but in the end finished poorly and could have had more.
From a Bournemouth perspective, the Cherries struggled to have a big influence on the game, but they did make the most of their opportunities and will feel hard done by on the very soft penalty decision.
An exciting 45 minutes to come in the second half!
45+3 min: Now Ryan Gravenberch shakes and bakes down the right but he too blasts a wild effort into the Bournemouth sky. Another poor finish to a decent opportunity.
43rd min: Mohamed Salah does well to pull a cutback to Dominic Szoboszlai from 15 yards out, but he lashes at the shot and skies it nowhere close to the net. A late tackle attempt by a Bournemouth defender may have put him off at the last-second too. A poor effort in the end from a good shooting position.
Five minutes of added time are shown.
37th min: Chance, Bournemouth! David Brooks has the ball in the back of the net, but the left foot of Milos Kirkez was just barely offside in the buildup as he overlapped down the left! The goal is ruled out, and VAR confirms it! It’s tight, but he did look just offside on both the live and the still, so fair play. The AR saw it live as well.

28th min: PENALTY, LIVERPOOL! Cody Gakpo takes down a long ball over the top, and he goes down under a challenge from Lewis Cook! But on replay, there’s VERY little contact, if any at all, but VAR has confirmed it regardless!
Mohamed Salah will step up to take the effort…GOAL! LIVERPOOL! Salah converts for his 20th goal of the season, tucking the ball inside the bottom-right corner! Bournemouth will feel very frustrated with that decision, but they trail!

20th min: Chance, Bournemouth! ANTOINE SEMENYO HITS THE WOODWORK! The 25-year-old gets to the inside of Ibrahima Konate, who pushes him to the byline. No matter, as Semenyo whips his left foot at the ball and somehow puts it on frame from a very tight angle — literally. The ball crashes into the crossbar, he nearly roofed it!
17th min: Chance, Liverpool! The first real opportunity of the match falls to Cody Gakpo, who dribbles centrally to the top of the penalty area and shoots with his right foot from about 21 yards out. It’s a very centrally-located effort, but the ball bounces awkwardly which makes for a tough save for Kepa, who’s up to the task.
12th min: Bournemouth have done well to keep Liverpool at bay, but they have had hardly a touch on the ball. The first 10 minutes have been utterly dominated by the hosts so far possession wise.
5th min: Battling for the ball on his own end line, Tyler Adams takes Alexis Mac Allister’s shoulder right to his jaw, and goes down in a heap. He appears to be ok, but does look a little shaken up, and spits out some blood as he walks with the trainer to the sideline.
Kickoff: They’re under way at Vitality Stadium on the south coast!

30 mins to kickoff: A key member of the Bournemouth midfield has been Tyler Adams, who is back to his best since returning from injury. He has been sensational in stopping counter-attacks and build-ups, and the Cherries have taken off since he got stuck in.
Tyler Adams currently leads the Premier League in:

45 mins to kickoff: Chris Wood’s hat-trick has him soaring back up the goal scoring charts. He is now level with Alexander Isak for third in the league, just two behind leader Mohamed Salah!
1 hour to kickoff: Lineups are in. Liverpool are set up exactly as expected, with the only note being that Federico Chiesa misses out on a place in the squad entirely just days after completing his first 90-minute performance of the season. There’s simply no room for him with Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez available off the bench.
Bournemouth are also exactly as expected, with no quirks on either side. These two in-form teams will go head-to-head without any frills or surprises!

1 hour 30 mins to kick: Notably for the Premier League title race, Nottingham Forest is clobbering Brighton 3-0 at halftime of the early kickoff. Chris Wood and Morgan Gibbs-White both have goals, while the opener was an own goal from Lewis Dunk.
Completing the win would pull Forest level with second-place Arsenal on 47 points, six behind Liverpool. Arsenal play Man City tomorrow in the marquee game of the weekend.

1 hour 45 mins to kick: Liverpool U-18’s beat Chelsea today 3-2 in the quarterfinals of the Premier League Cup, notably because they scored three goals in the final eight minutes to complete a remarkable comeback! A former Chelsea youth product Rio Ngumoha scored the equalizer for Liverpool, and 17-year-old former Wolves youth team player Alvin Ayman bagged the winner.

2 hours to kickoff: Liverpool would settle for a repeat of this performance — a 4-0 win back in December 2018 — but this Bournemouth side is a different proposition. They’re unbeaten in 12 games and have scored 16 goals in their past four matches in all competitions.

Bournemouth vs. Liverpool lineups, team news
Bournemouth have a lengthy injury list, which makes their recent results all the more impressive. They are without Enas Unal for the season with a torn ACL, while a number of others are down for a few more weeks.
Evanilson, Marcos Senesi, and Julian Araujo have long-term injuries, while Adam Smith, Luis Sinisterra, James Hill, and Alex Scott are closer to a return but still not ready to see the pitch. Julio Soler is currently away from the club, on international duty with Argentina for the South American U-20 championship, which wraps up in mid-February.
USA international Tyler Adams has finally enjoyed a spell of fitness in midfield and has proven his worth, a key cog in the club’s recent run of form.
Bournemouth starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Kepa (GK) — Cook, Zabarnyi, Huijsen, Kerkez — Christie, Adams — Brooks, Kluivert, Semenyo — Ouattara.
Bournemouth subs: Dennis (GK), Akinmboni, Winterbrun, Kinsey, Rees-Dottin, Silcott-Duberry, Jebbison, Tavernier, Adu-Adjei.
The Reds were without only Joe Gomez, Curtis Jones, and Diogo Jota through injury for their midweek Champions League match against PSV, and all three could be nearing a return.
Gomez has been out for a month with a hamstring injury but returned to training ahead of the PSV match. He didn’t recover in time to feature, but he could be worked back into the rotation soon. The same is true for Jones and Jota, who were not able to train before the PSV match but are expected to be back shortly. All three may be available for this game but it’ll be touch and go.
The likes of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Luis Diaz, and other top stars were rested midweek but all return here.
Liverpool starting lineup (4-3-3): Alisson (GK) — Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk, Konate, Robertson — Mac Allister, Szoboszlai, Gravenberch — Salah, Diaz, Gakpo
Liverpool subs: Kelleher (GK), Quansah, Bradley, Tsimikas, Endo, Jones, Elliott, Jota, Nunez.
