Borussia Dortmund keen to sign on-loan Chelsea outcast permanently

Chelsea have been active so far in the summer transfer window with the club landing some major signings including Joao Pedro and Jamie Gittens from Brighton and Borussia Dortmund, respectively.

However, amidst all the incoming names arriving at Stamford Bridge, the Blues still need to offload some of their surplus players, to balance the books in West London.

One players who looks certain to move on is Carney Chukwuemeka, who has not featured in in Enzo Maresca’s plans since the Italian coach arrived at the club last summer.

Chukwuemeka joined Dortmund on loan in January, and despite only registering two starts in 17 appearances for the Bundesliga outfit, they still want to sign him permanently.

His loan tenure came to an end when Dortmund lost to Real Madrid in the FIFA Club World Cup quarterfinals but a future decision looks imminent on the former England U20 international.

Despite not playing a lot of minutes in Germany, Dortmund were impressed with the 21-year-old and are ready to activate a purchase clause, as per talkSPORT.

Chukwuemeka has three years left on his contract, and it’s reported that Chelsea are not willing to sell him for less than his £40m [$54.6m] clause.

What did Dortmund’s sporting director say about Chukwuemeka?

Chukwuekmeka joined Chelsea in 2022 from Aston Villa for £20m ($27.3m), but his time at at the club has been plagued with injuries.

While he couldn’t impress Maresca, that was not the case at Dortmund, where Niko Kovac was a big admirer of his talents.

Both Kovac and Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl are keen to sign the former Villa star.

“Carney’s loan has ended. That’s what we agreed with Chelsea. Now, let’s see. We’ll definitely have some more discussions in the next few days about his situation,” he told Ben Jacobs.

“I think it was a good move for Carney to join us. Now let’s see how we manage everything. It won’t be easy, but we will try to keep him because he’s a very good player.

“This topic is something for the future, right now I don’t know what will happen.

A move to Dortmund could prove to be the ideal scenario for Chukwuemeka in terms of his growth and development.

However, Dortmund are not currently in a position to match Chelsea’s demands and they may only be able to offer another loan but with an obligation to buy in 2026.
