Bold trade pitch has Rangers and Avalanche swapping high profile wingers

The NHL trade market has been far too quiet of late.

After an initial flurry to start the offseason, the rest of the summer was a dud, but with the 2025-26 season now underway, all it takes is two teams to get the ball rolling again.

One that everyone is keeping an eye on is the situation between Martin Necas and the Colorado Avalanche, as it mirrors last year’s Mikko Rantanen saga.

In a contract year, Necas’ future as an Av is very much up in the air, and because of that, Nestor Quixtan of Heavy Sports believes the New York Rangers should pounce on it. Quixtan proposes that they send young winger Alexis Lafreniere back to Colorado in a one-for-one swap.

Rangers receive: Martin Necas

Avalanche receive: Alexis Lafreniere

“Landing Necas would turbocharge the Rangers’ top six. They would have both Necas and Artemi Panarin roaming the ice. That amount of high-end scoring could just be what the Blue Shirts need to get more out of their offensive game. As for Lafreniere, the Rangers would be moving on from their former first-overall pick. Judging from the numbers alone, Necas would be a major upgrade over Lafreniere,” Quixtan wrote.

As mentioned, the 26-year-old Necas just began the second and final season of the two-year, $13 million extension he originally signed with the Hurricanes in 2024. On the other hand, the 24-year-old Lafreniere just began the first season of his seven-year, $52.15 million deal signed to extend with the Rangers in 2024.

Necas is sizzling to start the season

While speculation and rumors are abuzz, Martin Necas is just increasing his value with his play on the ice.

The Czech winger is off to a blazing hot start to the new campaign, having potted three goals and five assists for eight points in just four games played.

Necas has looked phenomenal alongside Nathan MacKinnon, as their chemistry appears to have taken a huge step forward in year two together.

It makes the situation all the more tricky for the Avalanche, who evidently love the player but may not be as fond of the potential cost to keep him.

If it does reach a point where Necas becomes available, we know that the Rangers have and will continue to be interested in bringing him to New York.
