The Toronto Blue Jays missed on another big free agent when Pete Alonso signed with the New York Mets. They could look to pivot and make one last move before Opening Day.
The Blue Jays made a run at Alonso after signing Anthony Santander but failed. While listing players the Blue Jays could pivot to, FanSided’s Zach Pressnell urged the team to trade for Triston Casas of the Boston Red Sox.
“The Blue Jays have the capabilities to swing a blockbuster trade this winter. Not only do they have the money to chase the big name free agents like Alonso and company, but they also have a loaded farm system of prospects,” wrote Pressnell. “If Toronto wants to bring in a talented hitter with a bright future, they could call the Boston Red Sox and ask about 24-year-old star first baseman Triston Casas. This would move Guerrero over to third base while Casas plays first. It would also give Guerrero a young running mate who could grow with the team for years to come.”
Trading Casas would allow the Red Sox to finally move Rafael Devers to first base. Additionally, it would help the Blue Jays efforts to convince Guerrero to re-sign next winter. Casas has a .250/.357/.473 slash line in his career. Last season he played in just 63 games but hit 13 home runs with a .800 OPS.
Alonso is one of the best power hitters in the sport. However, Casas would be a decent consolation prize. The Blue Jays have already made one blockbuster trade this winter by trading for Andrés Giménez. Casas would bring a rising, elite hitter to Toronto.
