Blue Jays predicted to trade superstar for ‘light return’ in 2025 blockbuster

The Toronto Blue Jays missed out on Juan Soto this offseason. Their whiff could negatively impact their ability to convince Vladimir GUerrero Jr. to stay in Toronto. They could end up trading the superstars before he walks in free agency.

MLB Insider Jim Bowden predicted that the team would make the “wow” move of the 2025 All-Star Break and trade Guerrero for a surprising return.

“The wow story around the 2025 All-Star break will be the Blue Jays trading Vlad Jr. Everyone will look at the light return and wonder why they didn’t do it two years earlier when they would have landed a game-changing return, like the Nationals did when they dealt Soto to the Padres in 2022,” wrote Bowden.

Guerrero is a four-time All-Star and will be the prize of the next offseason. The Blue Jays would love to have him back in Toronto, but they have not shown they can be a competitive organization year in and year out. They tried signing Shohei Ohtani last offseason and made a run at Soto this year.

With just half a season left on his deal by the 2025 All-Star break, the return will be significantly less than if they had moved him last offseason or even the trade deadline prior. When the Washington Nationals traded Soto he had two full seasons left of club control. The San Diego Padres gave up their CJ Abrams, Robert Hassell III, MacKenzie Gore, James Wood, Jarlin Susana, Josh Bell and Luke Voit. Abrams, Hassell, Gore, Wood and Susana were the team’s No. 1, No. 2, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 19 prospects according to MLB Pipeline.

The Blue Jays return at the 2025 All-Star Break would seem like nothing compared to that.
