The Toronto Blue Jays have not found much success on the open market. However, they have found success in trading for star players. They could bring back a familiar face through a trade with the New York Yankees.
The Blue Jays could try to bring in another starter to add to their group of Kevin Gausman, José Berríos and Chris Bassitt. NorthJersey.com’s Pete Caldera predicted the New York Yankees would trade Marcus Stroman to the Blue Jays.
“Seeking to unload Marcus Stroman’s $18 million contract for ’25, GM Brian Cashman trades the right-hander back to the willing-to-spend Toronto Blue Jays for two lottery pick prospects,” wrote Caldera.
Stroman spent the first five and a half seasons with the Blue Jays to start his big-league career. He was traded to the New York Mets in 2019. Last offseason he signed a two-year, $37 million deal with the Yankees. He had a down season but was an All-Star in 2023. The Blue Jays could add the 2-time All-Star to the backend of their rotation.
The Blue Jays have already pulled off one trade for an All-Star this offseason. They traded for Andés Giménez from the Cleveland Guardians. Stroman had a 4.31 ERA last season in 30 games. He is just one season removed from an All-Star campaign. The Yankees are likely trying to dump his contract.
The Blue Jays are desperate to make moves and have money to spend. Stroman also has a vesting option for 2026 that will kick in if he pitches 140 innings next year.
