Blue Jays predicted to cut ties with $63 million veteran after 3 years in Toronto

The Toronto Blue Jays may look a lot different in future seasons than they do in 2025.

Every Major League Baseball team experiences turnover season over season, but the Blue Jays have more outcomes on the table than most. Whether or not they can keep superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr. after the season is the biggest consideration, but there are lots of other variables as well.

Over the past few seasons, the Blue Jays have been steadily increasing their spending to try and build a championship core. Those efforts haven’t paid off in anything more than two brief playoff appearances, and now some of those expensive contracts are starting to expire.

Veteran pitcher Chris Bassitt has been as advertised in his first two seasons as a Blue Jay, eating a ton of innings and posting a sub-four ERA. But he’s getting older and he’s currently expensive, which means this could very well be his last ride in Toronto.

On Monday, FanSided’s Zach Pressnell predicted that the Blue Jays would let Bassitt go after the season, preserving salary after paying the 36-year-old $63 million over the last three seasons.

“(Bassitt) is on the final year of his contract making over $22 million. This offseason, he’ll likely be looking for another lucrative contract, but it won’t come with the Blue Jays,” Pressnell wrote.

“Toronto has some solid pitching depth at the big league level and at the top of the minor leagues. The Blue Jays will likely be ready to promote top prospects Ricky Tiedemann, Jake Bloss, and Trey Yesavage by the beginning to middle of 2026.”

Bassitt picked up the win in his first start of the 2025 season on Sunday, tossing six innings of one-run ball against the Baltimore Orioles. He owns a 3.82 ERA (109 ERA+) across 65 starts and 377 innings pitched in Toronto.

The other question that remains is whether Bassitt lasts beyond the trade deadline in Toronto. One has to figure that if the team sells at the deadline, he’d be one of the easiest pieces to part ways with as a pure rental.
