The Toronto Blue Jays finally made a splash in free agency by signing Anthony Santander. However, they could still make one more superstar addition before Opening Day.
While predicting the Opening Day lineups for every team, Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter predicted that the Blue Jays would sign Pete Alonso away from the New York Mets.
“The Blue Jays have become the most likely landing spot for Pete Alonso, and a middle-of-the-order of Vladimir Guerrero Jr., newly signed Anthony Santander and Alonso might be good for 100-plus home runs,” wrote Reuter. “That is also a trio that provides little value outside of what they do in the batter’s box.”
Alonso is a four-time All-Star and one of the best home run hitters in the league. The Blue Jays may be a perfect fit for him. The Blue Jays could lose Vladimir Guerrerop Jr next winter. Signing Alonso now would give them a first baseman in the future if that happens. However, it also helps them convince Guerrero to stay.
The Blue Jays have been willing to spend but have not had luck convincing players to sign with them. At this point in the offseason, the Blue Jays may be the only team willing to give Alonso a long-term deal. If Alonso opts to sign a short-term deal with opt-outs the Blue Jays might struggle to keep him away from the Mets.
Alonso is one of the best home run hitters in baseball. Adding him to a lineup with Guerrero and Santander would give the Blue Jays lineup some much-needed juice.
