Blue Jays pitcher serves fantasy football punishment: Chris Bassitt serves as ball boy in spring training

Pro athletes are just like us. They antagonize their friends and teammates during fantasy football season. While gambling is not allowed among MLB players, there are no rules against friendly fantasy football leagues.

The players can’t win money from the leagues or it becomes gambling, so instead there are fun punishments that teams comes up with. For the past few years, the Blue Jays have had an iconic punishment. The loser of the fantasy football league is given a custom jersey and has to serve as the team’s ball boy during a spring training game.

Fantasy football punishments come in all shapes and sizes. We have seen losers having to re-create music videos, spend 24 hours in a Waffle House, or taking the SAT amongst a room of 18-year-old college hopefuls.

Toronto’s punishment is more about humiliation, but it is still in good fun. The Blue Jays player who finishes last in the league is given a custom jersey of their record from the fantasy football season. They then have to serve as the team’s ball boy in a spring training game.

The 2024-2025 league loser was starting pitcher Chris Bassitt. He was donned with a 4-10 Bassitt jersey and served his punishment Saturday against the Yankees. To make things better, it was the pitcher’s 36th birthday.

Last year’s league loser was relief pitcher Tim Mayza.
