Blue Jays linked to possible trade of $15 million Cardinals starter by MLB insiders

The Toronto Blue Jays have surged their way back into postseason contention following a slow start to the 2025 season. They are 41-36 and have control of the second American League Wild Card spot.

Still, there are some holes they may need to fill. The starting rotation is strong, but has been missing Max Scherzer for much of the season.

Perhaps Toronto could be in the mix to pick up a starter at the trade deadline. Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel of ESPN listed Erick Fedde is a trade candidate.

Toronto was on the St. Louis Cardinals right-hander’s list of suitors.

“Fedde’s strikeout and walk numbers have regressed from his breakout 2024 season (after coming back from a stint in the KBO League), but he’s allowing less damage on batted balls to keep himself in the rotation.”

The Blue Jays could certainly benefit from having Fedde in the rotation. He’s more of a pitch-to-contact pitcher, but typically doesn’t walk many batters, even if those numbers have regressed.

The veteran right-hander has been unlucky this year in terms of run support. He’s 3-6 with a 3.54 ERA in 15 starts with the Cardinals.

The Blue Jays might have to give up a haul to land Fedde. Last year’s trade deadline indicated that the price of rental pitching in late July is rising and will continue to do so over the next several years.

But the Blue Jays could at the very least land a dependable starter that can give them innings and take the ball every fifth day.

Last season, he went 9-9 with a 3.30 ERA with the Cardinals and Chicago White Sox. We’ll see if the Blue Jays show interest.
