Blue Jays haven’t lost since Maple Leafs traded Mitch Marner to Vegas

At the risk of a jinx, this stat is too good to pass up.

On June 30, news broke that the Toronto Maple Leafs would pursue a sign-and-trade of superstar two-way winger Mitch Marner to the Vegas Golden Knights.

Since that day, the Toronto Blue Jays haven’t lost.

The Blue Jays actually won on June 29 to set the stage and start what is now a 10-game winning streak, with nine of the victories coming after the sign-and-trade news first broke.

It’s been a bit of a dicey run. Here are the nine scores since that news:

  • June 30: Blue Jays 5, Yankees 4
  • July 1: Blue Jays 12, Yankees 5
  • July 2: Blue Jays 11, Yankees 9
  • July 3: Blue Jays 8, Yankees 5
  • July 4: Blue Jays 4, Angels 3 (walk-off in 10)
  • July 5: Blue Jays 4, Angels 3 (walk-off in 11)
  • July 6: Blue Jays 3, Angels 2
  • July 7: Blue Jays 8, White Sox 4
  • July 8: Blue Jays 6, White Sox 1

Yeah, that’s a pretty good run.

The strong play has jolted the Blue Jays up into first place in the American League East Division. It’s got Vladimir Guerrero Jr. fired up. It’s got Bo Bichette smiling.

The Toronto faithful are fired up.

And while there probably isn’t any correlation to Marner’s departure, there are so many times in sports history where it seems the game has some kind of odd sense of humor. Maybe this is one of those times.
