The Toronto Blue Jays failed to extend Vladimir Guerrero Jr. He will be a free agent next winter and the Blue Jays have not had much success landing free agents. If they lose Alonsos, they could target new superstars in free agency like the New York Yankees did when they lost Juan Soto to the New York Mets.
There will be plenty of players the Blue Jays could go after if they lose Guerrero. One likely candidate is Pete Alonso. The Mets will likely be involved in the Guerrero sweepstakes if Alonso opts out. FanSided’s Austin Owens suggested that the Blue Jays could steal Alonso away from the Mets.
“If Toronto lets Guerrero walk in free agency, they will likely look for a first baseman to take his spot although the team will also have other needs to address,” wrote Owens. “At one point this offseason, the Blue Jays were listed as a potential suitor for slugger Pete Alonso but the ‘Polar Bear’ stayed in Queens. Yes, Alonso’s deal to return to the Mets is a two-year contract but it includes an opt-out clause at the end of this year. Quite frankly, the deal between the Mets and Alonso felt forced and there is a high possibility Alonso revisits the free agent market prior to the 2026 season to seek more money and the Blue Jays would be able to afford his asking price.”
Alonso was looking for a long-term deal but ended up settling to stay in Queens. However, if the Mets want to pay Guerrero, Alonso will likely be able to land a deal from the Blue Jays. The Blue Jays will suddenly be in need of a first baseman and have money to spend. Meanwhile, the relationship with the Mets could be fractured if the Mets go after Guerrero after Alonso opts out.
