Blue Jays could cut ties with $147M All-Star at trade deadline if struggles continue

The Toronto Blue Jays are 28-28 and 7 1/2 games out of the American League East lead. They are not guaranteed to be sellers at the trade deadline, but that could change.

The Blue Jays came into the year hoping to challenge the New York Yankees in the division. They signed Anthony Santander, traded for Andrés Giménez, signed Max Scherzer and managed to sign Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to an extension. However, being at .500 through 56 games is slightly underwhelming.

They can still go on a good run, but right now, they are still in danger of being forced to sell at the deadline. Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller suggested that while they are not poised to be sellers yet, things could change, and Bo Bichette could become available.

“Can’t imagine any of them would be selling if the deadline were today, but plenty of time for that pendulum to swing,” Miller wrote of the Blue Jays among other teams hovering around .500.

Bichette will quickly become a coveted player if the Blue Jays’ season slips away. He is playing in the final year of a three-year, $33 million deal and is slashing .277/.324/.426. He started out the year with poor power numbers, but has a .500 slugging percentage in May with six home runs. He hit 20-plus home runs in three consecutive seasons before 2024.

Bichette is a two-time All-Star and has led the American League in hits twice in his career. Spotrac projects him to earn a seven-year, $147 million deal as a free agent. The Blue Jays may not want to, or be able to, pay him after committing $500 million to Guerrero. Bichette’s price tag could go up if he shows that he has found his home run swing again.
