Blue Jays blockbuster trade idea sends 2-time All-Star Bo Bichette to NL contender

What is Bo Bichette’s future with the Toronto Blue Jays?

Early in his career, Bichette looked like the young star Toronto always hoped he could be. He’s a two-time American League All-Star shortstop and led the junior circuit in hits in both 2021 and 2022.

After an abysmal 2024 season, though, Bichette has been embroiled in trade rumors. He’s set to become a free agent at the end of the season, as is superstar first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and the thought is that the Blue Jays may need to get something for him while they can.

On Wednesday, Zach Pressnell of Newsweek suggested that the Blue Jays could trade Bichette to the Milwaukee Brewers, who lost their star shortstop, Willy Adames, to the San Francisco Giants in free agency this winter.

“While the two sides haven’t outwardly shared any ill feelings with each other, it’s hard to think there aren’t any,” Pressnell wrote. “The Blue Jays star is set to enter free agency after the 2025 season and it doesn’t seem a contract extension is close for the two sides.”

“The Brewers would likely have to part ways with a few top prospects to acquire the star shortstop, but if they can get him to revert back to his 2023 form, Milwaukee will once again be favored to take the NL Central.”

Bichette, who is still only 26, had a .598 OPS with just four home runs in 81 games last season. His career averages are a .798 OPS and 25 home runs per 162 games, so if he rebounds to his usual form, Milwaukee might get a player nearly identical to Adames.

If the last-place Blue Jays don’t believe it’s within their means to extend both Guerrero and Bichette, they’re right to deal the latter. It’s just a bummer that they’d have to do so when his value is at an all-time low, because he could still have multiple All-Star appearances ahead.
