Blue Jays All-Star Bo Bichette makes Team Brazil decision ahead of 2026 WBC

While the Toronto Blue Jays wait for their star shortstop to start hitting home runs again, another team is getting ready to welcome him to their roster.

Yes, Bo Bichette will be a free agent at the end of the season, so we can’t say with certainty where he will be playing during the 2026 Major League Baseball season. But in March of 2026, we now know exactly where Bichette will be playing.

On Tuesday, MLB.com’s Ayako Oikawa reported that Bichette has committed to playing for Team Brazil in the 2026 WBC, which will be the 27-year-old’s first time competing in the tournament’s main event.

Both Bichette and his older brother, Dante Bichette Jr., participated in the 2017 WBC qualifiers. The event took place in September, 2016, just a few months after Bichette was drafted in the second round by the Blue Jays.

“It means a lot to our whole family,” Bichette said, per Oikawa. “We want to do our best to contribute to the team’s victory and draw some attention to Brazilian baseball.”

Bichette’s father, ex-big-league outfielder Dante Bichette, is a native of Florida, where both Bichette brothers grew up. But his mother, Mariana, is from Porto Alegre, Brazil, giving him dual citizenship and eligibility to compete for Team Brazil.

This season, Bichette is slashing .290/.326/.363. He hasn’t homered since May 27 of last season, a 60-game streak that is beginning to gain some notoriety.

Still, Bichette is a two-time All-Star, and he’ll be by far the most accomplished player on Team Brazil’s roster. By the time the tournament begins, he should also know where he’ll be playing in the majors for the foreseeable future.
