Blue Jays $15 million All-Star ‘near-lock’ to be traded this summer

The Toronto Blue Jays are 13-15 to start the year and could be sellers during this summer’s trade deadline. They could look to part ways with some of their expiring contract in exchange for prospects.

The Blue Jays signed Max Scherzer to a one-year, $15 million deal in free agency. However, a thumb injury has derailed his season as soon as it started. FanSided’s Edward Eng tabbed him as a candidate to be traded this summer.

“While Scherzer is 40, he can still be a difference maker when he’s healthy,” wrote Eng. “It’s that last caveat that will likely determine what his future with the Blue Jays looks like. While a Schrezer return in the middle of the summer would be great if the Blue Jays were in the postseason hunt, it wouldn’t mean as much if the Blue Jays are out of the hunt. If Scherzer returns when the Jays are on the outside of the postseason picture, he’s a near-lock to get dealt.”

Scherzer had a 1.38 ERA with 18 strikeouts in spring training. However, he gave up two runs in three innings of work in his season debut. His thumb injury, which caused him to be scratched from his last few starts in the spring, likely played a role in his poor outing.

Scherzer is an eight-time All-Star, three-time Cy Young Award winner and two-time World Series champion. If he can stay healthy after his return, he could be a valuable piece to a contender.

“Not only is he 40, but he’s also on a one-year contract,” wrote Eng. “This wouldn’t be the first time that happened in his career, as he was traded from the Mets to the Rangers in 2023 and helped Texas win its first World Series title.”
