Blockbuster trade idea would send $28.5 million 4x All-Star to Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox have had a very productive offseason, but the regular season is almost upon us.

They’ve added Alex Bregman, Walker Buehler, Garrett Crochet and Aroldis Chapman and look like a threat to make it to the postseason in 2025.

However, more moves can’t be completely ruled out just yet. They could happen now or at the trade deadline.

The Toronto Blue Jays were unable to give Vladimir Guerrero Jr. a contract extension by his self-imposed February 18 deadline. Jared Bloom of Sportskeeda proposed the idea of Boston swinging a deal for Guerrero at some point this month.

“Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and the Toronto Blue Jays could not agree on an extension. Now, the slugger is slated to become a free agent following the end of the 2025 season,” Bloom wrote.

“If Toronto does not feel they are capable of re-signing Guerrero Jr. during the offseason, they can look to trade him. He could fit in nicely with the Boston Red Sox, who do not seem too committed to having Triston Casas be the guy at first base.”

Trades within the same division are quite rare, especially of this magnitude. However, it can’t be completely ruled out. The Red Sox are in win-now mode and could use more offense, even after signing Bregman.

A move such as this could make them a serious threat to dethrone the New York Yankees at the top of the American League East. They could also use Guerrero as a designated hitter and keep Casas at first base while moving Masataka Yoshida out of the shuffle.

Boston would have to blow Toronto away with an offer for this to work, but they’ve proven their desire to win now, and this would further cement them as contenders in the AL.

We’ll see if they can pull off a blockbuster deal.
