Blockbuster NBA Draft trade idea would send Cooper Flagg to elite Western Conference contender

Cooper Flagg is the consensus No.1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.

The 18-year-old from Maine posted a fantastic 2024 campaign for Duke and established himself as the biggest prize of this year’s draft. Flagg averaged 19.2 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game on 48.1% shooting from the field and 38.5% from three last year.

The Dallas Mavericks are expected to be Flagg’s NBA home, as the team currently holds the No.1 overall pick. However, Bleacher Report’s Grant Hughes believes the Oklahoma City Thunder could pull off a blockbuster trade with Dallas for the top pick and select Flagg.

“No team has more movable assets than the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Thunder are soon going to get expensive as they begin offering extensions to their in-house talent. An elite contributor on a rookie-scale deal—one who’d fit perfectly into the team- and defense-first ethos of the organization—could add years to a potential dynasty,” Hughes wrote.

We’ll keep this short. This isn’t going to happen.

Though the Mavericks and general manager Nico Harrison have a history of dumb trades, they aren’t going to give away their future face of the franchise in Flagg, no matter what package is presented.

Oklahoma City is two wins away from a championship, and the draft is in under two weeks. The front office won’t have much time to consider making a trade like this, and it would be foolish for them to tear down their championship-level roster for the No.1 overall pick
