Bills’ ‘unsung hero’ not who you think it is

When we think of the Buffalo Bills, Josh Allen, James Cook, Greg Rousseau and others come to mind, but as we know, football is a team game, and it takes all of the roster to win a Super Bowl.

Yes, Allen and co. are the ones who can all the limelight and the accolades because they are the stars of the show, but what about those who do their work in the shadows? The ones who do all of the dirty work on offense or on special teams that might not be household names, but are crucial to the team’s success?

For Buffalo, that’s Reggie Gilliam.

The fullback/running back/tight end has done it all for the Bills this season, and for Allen, he’s an unsung hero of the offense.

“He’s the ultimate Swiss Army Knife for us,” Allen said. “Playing tight end, fullback, he plays a lot of special teams for us. Again, guy that plays football the right way. Doesn’t care about the stats, doesn’t care about his name being in the paper, but if you go back and watch some of the runs that Jimbo’s [James Cook] had over the last few weeks, he’s been involved in quite a few of them of going in there and doing some of the dirty work.

“So, kind of an unsung hero of our offense right now.”

Bills need all hands on deck vs. Chiefs

With Kansas City next on the schedule, Sean McDermott will need all of his players to pull their weight if the Bills are to continue their regular-season dominance over the Chiefs.

The offense still feels a little off, and the defense will get a stern test against Patrick Mahomes and his vast array of weapons, which includes Rashee Rice.

But one way to limit Mahomes’ impact is to keep him on the sidelines, and the Bills have a good run game with James Cook, so Gilliam might again have a starring role to play, which will see him go largely unnoticed.

But according to Allen, that’s just how he likes it.

The stars are important to winning football games, but those who do the grunt work are often just as important. For Buffalo, Gilliam plays a crucial role in how the team operates.
