Bengals lose chance to deflect Shemar Stewart contract problem

Before Saturday, the Cincinnati Bengals had something else to figure out.

They had yet to sign second-round pick Demetrius Knight Jr. to his contract. It wasn’t just Shemar Stewart unsigned.

But on Saturday, the Bengals announced that Knight had signed his deal.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter summed things up simply: “Now on to their first rounder.”

Stewart is the last first-rounder who hasn’t signed.

The Bengals’ rookies reported to training camp on Saturday, but Stewart wasn’t there.

The Texas A&M star pass rusher is seeking a contract without a “default clause,” which is a standard request granted for first-round picks. But the Bengals haven’t given in yet.

But they can’t deflect attention any longer. They’ve got all their other draft picks signed. All that’s left is Stewart.
