Benfica’s summer transfer window has been far from calm as Portuguese giants prepare for a crucial UEFA Champions League playoff against Nice.
The departure of club legend Angel Di Maria, who returned to Rosario in July, after eighteen years has created a major void that has sparked concern among fans and forced the club’s board into action.
Benfica have responded by signing two new midfielders – in Enzo Barrenechea and Richard Ríos – with the aim of bringing strength and control to the centre of the pitch.
These additions have offered some relief to Bruno Lage, but he still wants a marquee player to add to his attack.
Benfica tried and failed to re-sign Joao Felix as he instead chose Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia to link up with Portugal teammate Cristiano Ronaldo.
Now the club are chasing a different solution to fill that attacking gap.

Benfica eye outcasted PSG star
According to Correio da Manha [via Foot Mercato], Benfica have submitted a €11m [$12.5m] offer to PSG for Marco Asensio, as the Spanish forward who finds himself unwanted in Paris.
Benfica are confident the bid is sufficient to convince PSG to part ways with Asensio, who is not in Luis Enrique’s plans for the upcoming season.
Asensio joined PSG in 2023, after leaving Real Madrid, and despite arriving with high expectations he’s never fully established himself.
He spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa, but his future is unresolved with Fenerbahce also reaching out with a previous offer.
However, Asensio has reportedly not agreed to personal terms as he’s not enthusiastic about moving to Turkey.
Benfica are now trying to capitalize on the situation and have placed him at the top of their list of targets as Lage awaits an answer from Paris.
