The Detroit Lions have been bracing for the loss of offensive coordinator Ben Johnson for a few years now, as the talented coach has been arguably the hottest name in the NFL when it comes to head-coach vacancies around the league.
Despite that, the Lions have been able to keep their superstar offensive coordinator, as he simply hasn’t taken a job, even with several overtures from teams. Unfortunately, that figures to change in 2025.
Johnson made it quite clear that he very much has a desire to be a head coach in the NFL, which only adds fuel to the fire that he’ll be gone after the 2024 campaign.
“Yeah, I’d say this, I think there’s a burning desire in every man to find what he’s made out of, push the limits and see if he’s got what it takes,” Johnson said last month, according to ESPN’s Eric Woodyard. “So, yeah, there’s a fire there. Now, when that time is, I don’t know when that’ll be, but there’s certainly a fire there.”
While it remains to be seen if Johnson will actually move on this time around, he is at least going to take interviews, and the requests for those interviews can start rolling in on Monday.
And, thanks to the Lions securing a first-round bye, teams can begin talking to Johnson from Wednesday, Jan. 8, to Monday, Jan. 13.
