Bears QB Caleb Williams’ NFL prep has a surprising connection to Steph Curry

Last season, 12 losses and 68 sacks surely made things difficult for Caleb Williams. It was challenging, but at the same time, the 2024 NFL draft’s No. 1 pick learned a lot. Now, Williams is expected to put on great performances in his second year under first-year head coach Ben Johnson. He has been working throughout the offseason to make sure that he’ll be ready for the 2025 season.

Williams has set a target for himself this upcoming season: to become the first Bears quarterback to throw for 4,000 yards and complete 70 percent of his passes. It’s a tough task. To make sure he achieves it, he has taken some unique approaches.

The Athletic’s Kevin Fishbain shed some light on this on Monday.

Fishbain highlighted how Williams has adopted an intense focus on detail and footwork. He is drawing inspiration from the precision that NBA superstar Steph Curry demands of himself during practice sessions.

“When Steph Curry practices, only a swish counts as a ‘make,’ and Williams wanted to mimic that strategy during the offseason,” Fishbain wrote. “Johnson told him to work on short throws to his left, so Williams did his best to perfect it.”

Williams has also incorporated basketball-inspired footwork drills into his routine. Fishbain pointed out how Williams compares some of his practice moves to “basketball players mimicking moves like the ‘Euro step’ against a wall,” moving from room to room with quarterback footwork and play-action drops rehearsed with the same intensity.

Williams is ready for the challenge. He has to be, given the high intensity that Ben Johnson demands.
