Bears could soon cut ties Cole Kmet in trade with Chiefs

The Chicago Bears drafted Colston Loveland with the 10th overall pick in the NFL Draft. That move could be the beginning of the end of Cole Kmet’s time with the team.

The Bears drafted Kmet in the second round of the 202 NFL Draft. He has turned into a valuable player for them and even signed a four-year, $50 million extension in 2023. However, with Loveland now in the fold and a new head coach, who did not have a say in bringing Kmet to Chicago, the Bears may be willing to trade him while he has some value.

Kmet had 474 receiving yards and four touchdowns last year. He is rarely injured and has over 2,500 yards for the Bears, despite some inconsistent quarterback play. Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox suggested the Bears could ship Kmet to the Kansas City Chiefs.

“The Kansas City Chiefs should also consider taking a flier on Kmet if he’s available,” wrote Knox. “Travis Kelce is still holding down the starting job, but he’ll turn 36 in October. The Chiefs could view Kmet as a potential successor to Kelce and a great complementary option behind Kelce, along with Noah Gray.”

The Bears’ offense figures to have a new look under Ben Johnson, and it’s no coincidence that the team spent a top 10 pick on Loveland. Sam LaPorta was a key player for Johnson in Detroit, and he likely sees Loveland filling that same role.

Kmet still has a few years on his contract and many teams could view him as an asset. The Chiefs likely know that Kelce’s career is close to the finish line, and having his successor in-house would not be bad.
